Flying to Galveston for a cruise? Houston Hobby (HOU) is the closer airport, but George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) can still make sense if the flights are better. From either airport, you can arrange a shared shuttle, Uber or Lyft, a private driver, or a cruise-line transfer. The best option depends on how many people you have, your luggage, when you land, and where you’re staying.
We’ve done this a couple of different ways. We’ve stayed near IAH, taken Royal Caribbean’s coach bus, and used Uber directly from our hotel. My mother-in-law used Galveston Saltwater Moms and stayed on the island before taking a shuttle to the port.
We’ve also paid about $50 for a short Uber ride to an airport hotel because its airport shuttle had already stopped running for the day when we landed.
So, yes, getting to Galveston is manageable but different than most other cruise ports because of the time and distance. Here are a few details I wish we had a better understanding of on our first trip.
Which airport should you fly into for a Galveston cruise?

The Port of Galveston describes the drive as roughly 45 minutes from Hobby and 90 minutes from IAH. Those are estimates for the drive, not the time from your plane landing to your arrival at cruise check-in. You still have to get off the plane, collect your bags, find your ride, and account for traffic. Port transportation guide, airport distances
If the flights are otherwise similar, I’d start with Hobby. But I wouldn’t add multiple flight connections just to save part of the drive.
Also, Hobby isn’t exclusively Southwest. Its official airline directory lists American and Delta as well, they tend to be less frequent and more expensive tho. Check what actually works from your departure airport. Hobby airline directory
The comparison that matters is the full trip: airfare, bags, transportation, and any overnight stay. A cheaper ticket into IAH may still be a good deal. It just needs to remain a good deal after you get off the plane.
Should you stay near the airport or go straight to Galveston?
If you arrive with enough time and energy, staying in Galveston gets the longer transfer out of the way before cruise morning. If you arrive late, an airport hotel can be practical but check its shuttle hours and your next morning’s transportation first.
We’ve stayed at two hotels near IAH: SpringHill Suites by Marriott Houston Intercontinental Airport and Staybridge Suites Houston IAH – Beltway 8.
For the places we stayed, getting around on foot wasn’t especially convenient. Don’t assume that a restaurant looking nearby on a map means you can easily walk there. Check the actual route, crossings, and opening hours.
That might sound like a small thing until you’re standing in your hotel room hungry and realizing dinner requires another ride.
Our midnight airport-shuttle surprise
A few years ago, we stayed at SpringHill Suites near IAH. Our flight arrived after midnight because of a delay, and the hotel shuttle had stopped operating at midnight.
We ended up taking an Uber for about $50 just to get to the nearby hotel.
That was our experience at the time, not a statement about the hotel’s current shuttle schedule. But the lesson still applies: “Has an airport shuttle” and “will pick us up when we arrive” are two different things.
Before booking, ask:
- What time is the last airport pickup?
- Do we call after collecting our bags, or does the shuttle run on a schedule?
- What happens if our flight is delayed?
- Where exactly do we meet the driver?
Use the time you expect to be ready at the curb. A flight landing at 11:45 p.m. doesn’t mean you’ll be outside with your luggage before midnight.
Staying in Galveston before the cruise
My mother-in-law used Galveston Saltwater Moms, stayed on the island closer to the port, and took a shuttle over in the morning.
That arrangement puts the longer airport transfer behind you before embarkation day. You still need to confirm the final ride, though.
Ask your hotel whether its cruise shuttle requires a reservation, what it costs, and whether it serves your specific terminal. A hotel being near the beach or “the pier” doesn’t automatically make it walking distance to your ship.
Is Uber cheaper than a shuttle?
Sometimes, especially when several people share one vehicle. Compare the total for your group, using a vehicle that actually fits everyone and their luggage.
A shuttle generally charges per passenger. A rideshare quote is for the vehicle. That difference matters for a family or a group.

Galveston Express lists $45 one way from either airport. Its page also lists a $50 charge per reservation for selected airport-area hotel pickups or drop-offs, plus Sunday service restrictions. Galveston Express fares
If an Uber quote looks cheaper, check the luggage situation before deciding. Four seats don’t necessarily mean space for four people, four suitcases, and carry-ons. You may need a larger vehicle or two cars.
Price the trip back to the airport separately, too. Your arrival fare doesn’t establish what the return will cost.
What was Royal Caribbean’s shuttle like?
The coach bus itself was fine. For us, the downside was returning to the airport and waiting before we could board it.
After our SpringHill stay, we took the hotel shuttle back to IAH to meet Royal Caribbean’s transfer.
Our meeting and check-in area was around baggage claim. There was a time on our ticket, but there were already people arriving early and a long line for check-in. We spent a while waiting before getting on the coach.
I would plan for that waiting time rather than treating the ticket time as the moment you’ll be driving away. It also means the time you scheduled to arrive at the ship is most likely going to change.
Confirm when to report, what the time on your ticket means, and where your group meets. Our experience was several years ago, so use the instructions for your own booking rather than assuming the location or process is unchanged.
Can you use Royal Caribbean’s transfer if you fly in the day before?
We did return to the airport the next morning and use it. You should still confirm that Royal Caribbean accepts your particular arrangement before booking around it.

The traveler discussions we reviewed included both successful next-morning arrangements and someone being refused because their flight arrived the evening before.
Give Royal Caribbean your actual travel details and get confirmation of eligibility, meeting time, and location. If that arrangement isn’t available, compare an independent shuttle or driver that accommodates your schedule.
What was Uber from the hotel like?
On our other trip, we stayed at Staybridge Suites Houston IAH – Beltway 8. The staff were nice and printed our cruise luggage tags for us, which was helpful.
Our Uber picked us up directly at the hotel. That removed the hotel-shuttle ride back to IAH and the cruise-transfer queue from our morning.
The driver also asked whether we wanted to stop at Buc-ee’s. We’d never been, so we said yes. He stopped, we weren’t charged anything extra for that stop, and it ended up being a really good part of the trip.
That was our particular driver’s offer, not something included with every Uber ride. If you want a stop, arrange it and confirm the cost beforehand.
The practical advantage for us was the direct hotel pickup. The Buc-ee’s visit was a bonus.
What about Galveston Saltwater Moms or another private driver?
A private driver is worth comparing if you want an arranged hotel pickup, have a larger group, or need transportation outside shared-shuttle hours.
My mother-in-law used Galveston Saltwater Moms. The service also appears in Avenue O bed-and-breakfast’s recommendations for airport transportation to its Galveston property. We haven’t independently confirmed its current prices or operating hours. Avenue O’s local listing
Whichever company you contact, provide the same details so the quotes are comparable:
- Airport and flight arrival time.
- Exact hotel or cruise terminal.
- Passenger count and luggage.
- Child-seat or accessibility needs.
- Return date and departure airport.
Ask what happens if the flight is late and whether the quoted price is for your party alone or a shared ride.
Where do you meet Uber or Lyft at Houston’s airports?
At IAH, rideshare pickups are not all at one terminal. Houston Airports currently lists:

If you need to change terminals, Skyway runs inside security and Subway runs outside security. Collect your checked bags before heading to your final pickup point. The Subway’s published hours are 3:15 a.m.–12:15 a.m., so don’t assume it will be operating after a late-night arrival. IAH train information

Hotel shuttles, private drivers, and cruise transfers may meet elsewhere. Use the instructions for the service you booked.
Is there a public bus from the airport?
Houston has airport bus service, but a bus into Houston and cheaper if you want to avoid the airport surge charges.

If you’re considering public transportation, check the entire route, operating hours, and remaining connection with luggage. A cheap first ride may leave you needing another, more expensive one.
The same applies to changing airports to reach a hotel’s free shuttle. If you land at IAH and the hotel shuttle serves Hobby, compare a direct ride to the hotel before paying to get to Hobby first.
Can you get to Galveston after an evening flight?
Yes, if you arrange transportation that works with your arrival. Don’t assume a shared shuttle runs late just because the company serves your airport.
For a 7 p.m. landing, ask about a pickup after you’ve had time to collect your bags. Confirm the last shared departure, late-arrival policy, and whether an evening booking requires a private vehicle.
Some travelers reported finding rides around midnight without difficulty. Others described expensive fares or waits. Those experiences don’t guarantee availability or a price on your date.
Choose between a confirmed late transfer to Galveston and an airport hotel with a workable next-morning plan. If continuing to the island, let the hotel know you’ll be checking in late.
How early can you fly home after the cruise from Galveston?
An afternoon flight provides more room than a morning departure. There isn’t one flight time that is guaranteed to work for every sailing.
One traveler in the discussions we reviewed reported lining up for self-assist at 7 a.m., leaving the ship starting at 7:15, and reaching the curb about 25 minutes later. Their ride to IAH took just over an hour, and they comfortably made an 11:40 a.m. flight.
We had a similar experience with self assist, We left the ship later but easily got to the airport early.
That is a useful example of a smooth morning. It isn’t a timetable for everyone else.
Royal Caribbean’s self-assist option lets travelers who can manage their own luggage keep their bags overnight and carry them off. It removes the need to collect those bags in the terminal, but it doesn’t control when disembarkation begins or how the road journey goes. Work backward from your flight:
Airline’s recommended airport arrival time + drive and traffic allowance + transportation wait + disembarkation and terminal processing.
The ship’s scheduled docking time is not the time you’re guaranteed to be in an Uber. TSA PreCheck doesn’t change that, and an airport arrival is still followed by any bag check, security screening, and the walk to your gate.
Before buying the flight, confirm your cruise line’s recommended earliest departure and your transfer provider’s actual schedule. We wouldn’t choose an early flight solely because someone else made it once.
What we’d check before booking again
I’d start by comparing the flights into both airports, then choose the hotel and transportation together.
For a late arrival, I’d confirm the hotel shuttle’s actual hours and where we could get food. For a direct transfer to Galveston, I’d confirm late pickup and hotel check-in. For Royal Caribbean’s coach, I’d account for getting back to the airport and waiting before departure.
Then I’d add up the whole trip:
Flights, baggage, hotel, airport-to-hotel transportation, hotel-to-port transportation, and the ride back to the airport.
We’ve made both the coach and Uber options work. The difference was knowing what each one required before we were standing at the airport trying to figure out the next step.
